Fairytale photography is more than just an artistic trend—it’s an invitation into a world of wonder, where reality and fantasy blend seamlessly. But where did this enchanting style begin, and why has it captured the hearts of so many?
The roots of fairytale photography can be traced back over a century. In 1917, two young cousins, Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths, created what became known as the Cottingley Fairies photographs. These images, depicting delicate fairy-like beings in a woodland setting, convinced many—including famed author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle—that they were real. Though the girls later admitted to staging the photos using paper cutouts, their work set the stage for a growing fascination with blending photography and fantasy.

While the Cottingley Fairies were an illusion, they paved the way for photographers to explore fantasy and storytelling through imagery. Over time, certain artists emerged as pioneers in crafting ethereal, dreamlike worlds:
Kristy Mitchell
created The Wonderland Series, a deeply personal and visually stunning body of work inspired by her late mother’s love for literature. Every image is a meticulous work of art, with elaborate costumes and handcrafted props transporting viewers into a storybook realm.
Annie Leibovitz
introduced fairytale elements into her photography through her Disney Dream Portrait Series, where celebrities became beloved storybook characters. Her ability to blend fine art with portraiture elevated the genre into mainstream culture.
Tim Walker
known for his whimsical editorial photography, crafts scenes straight out of a dream. His signature use of oversized props, surreal settings, and pastel hues gives his work a theatrical, enchanted quality.
So why do photographers and clients alike continue to be drawn to this whimsical style?
Escapism & Imagination
Fairytale sessions transport people away from the everyday, allowing them to step into a story where they become the hero, the princess, or the mystical being of their dreams.
Nostalgia & Storytelling
Many of us grew up enchanted by fairytales, and these sessions bring those stories to life in a deeply personal way.
Empowerment & Beauty
Wearing flowing gowns, standing in enchanted forests, and being captured in a way that feels otherworldly can be a transformative experience.
What started with a staged photograph of fairies in an English garden has evolved into a powerful artistic movement. From historical inspirations to modern-day storytelling, fairytale photography continues to invite dreamers of all ages to step into their own magical worlds.
